Pick one place and go back every week
Choose a café or coworking space near you and keep the same day and time. Regulars start recognising each other within a few weeks, and saying hello turns into sharing a table.
MQR has coworking branches in Maadi, New Cairo and Sheikh Zayed, and The GrEEK Campus in Downtown hosts many of the city's tech events.
Join a community built around doing something
Groups with a shared activity give you a reason to show up and something to talk about.
- Tech: GDG Cairo and GDG New Cairo run talks and workshops, including DevFest Cairo every year.
- Security: OWASP Cairo meetups are free and open to everyone.
- Running: Cairo Runners holds group runs early on Friday mornings, often with thousands of people.
- Everything else: Meetup and Facebook groups have Cairo groups for board games, books, languages and hiking.
Make the first meeting about an activity, not an interview
Sitting across from a stranger with nothing to do feels like a job interview. Work next to each other for two hours, play a round of tawla, or go to the same talk. Conversation comes easier when you're doing something together.
Follow up within a week with a specific plan
"We should hang out sometime" rarely happens. "I'm working from the café in Maadi on Sunday at 4, come if you're free" usually does. Suggest the next plan before the first one ends.
What about friendship apps in Egypt?
Most apps that help people meet in Egypt are built for dating, which makes many people, especially women, avoid them when they want friends. Bumble's standalone friends app isn't available in Egypt, and Timeleft stopped its dinners in Egypt in February 2026. Group apps exist, but a table of strangers is hard to turn into a real friendship.
